Life in a Metro is a 2012 film written, directed, and produced by D. J. Caruso. It tells the story of John Maynard Keynes who in 1930 moved into an apartment in Rotherhithe, London, aiming to work on his book "The General Theory of Employment" but soon discovers that he has little hope for success when he cannot afford space to write in peace. This movie is about the life of one man living amongst other people struggling against poverty and trying to find meaning in their own lives while being immersed with society's problems by living among them. It was filmed in metro stations of Mumbai, including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. J. Caruso entered negotiations with Paramount Pictures to direct a biopic based on the life of economist John Maynard Keynes titled "Life In a Metro". In August 2008, Caruso entered talks with actor Paul Bettany about playing the role of Keynes. In December 2008, Caruso officially signed to direct and Bettany officially signed to star in the film. In January 2009, Abbie Cornish entered negotiations to play Daisy Fellowes and in March 2009 actor Eddie Marsan entered negotiations for an unspecified role. In April 2009, Kevin Spacey joined the film to play Neville Chamberlain. Filming began on May 23, 2009 and was shot entirely in Mumbai, India using local talent both for cast and crew; all filming was done in one month. Principal photography wrapped up on July 4, 2009. The film was released on September 15, 2012. In the United States, the film debuted at #33 in its opening weekend with a gross of $2,441. In total the film took in $7,322,336 at the box office making it a flop. Film critic Scott Weinberg said that "Overall it's a suspenseful but too-long piece of "Metro"-style filmmaking that never quite comes together."
